A talk in French (held in person at the SGNO centre and via Zoom) will be hosted by Jean-Yves Vanier-Verbeek, SGNO president, on Tuesday, Octobre 6, 2026 at 7 p.m. (Edmonton time). The title of the talk — Ce que les journaux historiques peuvent nous révéler sur nos ancêtres.
Historical newspapers are a rich and often underused source for family history research. Beyond obituaries, they can reveal details about your ancestors’ daily lives through articles on local events, social activities, legal notices, accidents, community news, and more—helping bring their stories to life.
Through real newspaper case studies, attendees will learn how to identify often-overlooked article types and use newspapers to better understand the lives of their ancestors
